What is palliative care?
Palliative care is the care given to dogs which are approaching the end of their life, whether due to illness or old age. Palliative care is sometimes offered to owners whose dogs suffer from incurable conditions, such as end stage cancer, where treatment of the disease will not be appropriate, but the dog can still live out its life comfortably. A mixture of medication and lifestyle changes can allow pets to be comfortable and happier in their final days.
What kind of conditions can palliative care help with?
Palliative care is appropriate in conditions where the disease is incurable or the animal would benefit more from not being put through the pain and stress of the treatment. Such conditions can include cancer, organ failure, arthritis, neurological conditions or debilitating conditions.
How can I create a palliative care plan for my dog?
What is included in the palliative care plan for your dog will depend on the condition that it’s suffering from. The best way to come up with a plan is to seek veterinary advice. PawSquad vets visit you and your pet at home where you’re most comfortable. Your vet will offer you advice on how to make practical changes to your dog’s environment and lifestyle in order to make them most comfortable. They may also prescribe medication for pain management if necessary.

“I cannot recommend Mhairi Fleming from PawSquad in Edinburgh highly enough. Although Mhairi only visited my elderly springer spaniel (Morgan) twice I sincerely wish I had met her a long time ago as Morgan never liked going to the vet and it just caused her stress. As it was Morgan was at the end of her days and had given up and my vet doesn't of...”

“We were fortunate to have Peter the vet come to send our beloved cat over the rainbow bridge. We couldn't have asked for a nicer vet. He was calm compassionate and didn't rush us at all. Will be using PawSquad for our other furbabies. Thank you Peter!”

My previous visit from Kara was unfortunately a very sad time, having to put a much loved pet to sleep :( Kara spent time explaining everything and never ...”
